Certification in Integrated Care for Obesity

CICO is an online certificate course conducted and certified by OSSI and endorsed by International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Disorders (IFSO).

Bariatric surgery has become the most accepted treatment of choice for morbid obesity. Each year, thousands of patients undergo the surgery and need preoperative screening, postoperative care and long-term follow-up and support. This includes weight loss monitoring, medical treatment of comorbidities, nutritional care, and psychological support. A holistic care like this requires dedicated physicians, surgeons, dieticians, and psychologists in addition to other specialists.

There has been a rapid increase in knowledge and research in obesity management. However, there is still a deficiency of courses imparting cross-specialty knowledge. Additionally, there is a lack of enough allied health professionals dedicated to bariatric discipline in most parts of the world leading to suboptimal management.

This 8-week certification course aims to build physicians/surgeons/dieticians/psychologists for providing integrated care of obesity and sensitised to bariatric surgery to bridge this gap. The course will have lectures by experts in their field, with stress on practical knowledge. It is endorsed by IFSO.

  1. Course Modules:

    There will be 23 lectures over 8 weeks. Those applying for CICO must attend all lectures to understand the subject better.

    There will be exciting group activities for the assessment every week. Two detailed case capsules to learn the treatment algorithms from specialists. One session on research paper reading ethics to keep the CICO community up to date with the newer findings.

    After completing all modules by week 8, the candidates will take up the online examination on 02.03.24 for CICO Certification.

    • Pathophysiology of obesity.
    • Obesity-associated diseases / metabolic syndrome.
    • Knowledge of evidence-based weight loss diets
    • Importance and techniques of physical activity in weight loss programs.
    • Psychological evaluation and management of patients with obesity Awareness of nutritional and metabolic complications after bariatric surgery.
    • Indications of bariatric surgery- guidelines.
    • Preoperative evaluation of patients undergoing bariatric surgery/ weight loss management.
    • Nutritional management of patients undergoing bariatric surgery Follow-up the patients undergoing bariatric surgery.
    • Learning the effects of bariatric surgery on diabetes, GERD, chronic liver disease, sleep apnea, arthritis, organ dysfunction, and infertility.
  2. COURSE CURRICULUM
    1. Didactic Lectures

      The didactic online lectures. The lecture will be 20 minutes, covering the entire details about the topic, and 10 minutes for interaction with the faculty. The candidate must document that they participated in all the lectures. An automated online sign-off sheet will be used for this.

  3. MINIMUM ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
    • MBBS or equivalent
    • B.Sc. in Nutrition or equivalent
    • B.A. in Psychology or equivalent
    • A fully completed application form
  4. COURSE GUIDELINES
    • A fully completed application form along with supporting documents of adequate qualification and experience to be submitted online.
    • Once cleared by the CICO board, the candidate will be completing the course as per the core curriculum.
    • The candidate must complete all the lecture modules followed by the MCQ-based online exam.
    • 100% attendance for the group activities is mandatory.
  5. COURSE PERIOD
    • A typical course will be for eight weeks duration. One course will be planned during a calendar year.
    • Prior information to the course director is mandatory if you cannot attend the session.
  6. EXAMINATION
    • Examination will be held after the course completion. CICO certificates of the respective field will be provided to the successful candidates.
    • The examination includes online theory, which will be based on MCQs. The candidate will also be assessed on their clinical knowledge and problem-solving skills during group activities.
  7. FINAL ASSESSMENT
    • The final assessment score break-up will be as follows:
      • Final Online MCQ - 70
      • Final Online Group Activity - 30
      • The candidate should be clear with a minimum 50% score in each category. 35+15=50 marks
      • OSSI, endorsed by the IFSO certificate, will be awarded to those who pass the CICO
  8. FEE STRUCTURE
    • The CICO will not attract any admission fee. However, a non-refundable examination fee of Rs.5000 will be levied during registration.
    • Repeat candidates must re-apply for examination once the fellowship board approves their reappearance.
    • All expenses like clinical & research-related materials (textbooks, journal access), stationaries, etc, will be borne by the candidates themselves.

The candidate must document that they participated in all the lectures. Automated online Sign-Off Sheet will be used for this.     The candidate will be answering 10 random questions after each lecture and clearing the question session is mandatory for him / her to get attendance for the given lecture. The questions will typically be from the lecture and 50% correct answers will be considered as completion of the lecture. Kindly note that the lecture marks are counted for the final assessment. The candidate should have covered the entire lecture series on time to be eligible to appear for the examination.

  2. Webinar

    Weekly webinars on various topics including case capsules of common issues and special considerations will be covered. Minimum of 7 webinar will be conducted on Saturdays 5 pm to 6 pm. Webinars will be accessed through the OSSI learning management system (LMS) and attendance is mandatory for all candidates. 100% attendance for the webinars are mandatory. Any absenteeism should be prior informed and the missing candidate will have the recorded webinar to complete to be eligible for the final certificate examination.
